How to Commit to a Goal

Making progress on any goal you set requires commitment. If you don’t have that, you may not see your plan to the end. Setting the right type of goals and setting up a plan for success that includes daily action is the best way to showing your true commitment to a goal.

Know Why You Made the Goal

Whenever you make goals for anything, it’s important to know why. Does this goal help you with your mission in life? If you make goals that don’t fit in with your overall plan for your life, it’ll be hard to really commit because you won’t have a good enough reason to get through the times when you lack all motivation and willpower.

Set Your Goals Correctly

Any goal worth setting is worth going through the goal-setting process properly. The best way to set goals is to use the SMART goal process. This will ensure that your goals are developed in a way that you can truly see them to fruition. The SMART goal process ensures that each goal is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely.

Set Up a Process for Success

Once you’ve set a goal, you can use the entire process of goal setting to also set up the process for success. What steps do you need to take to reach your goal? For example, if you set a goal to learn 100 Spanish words in one year, what should the process look like, and what is required for you to succeed?

Don’t Rely on Motivation or Willpower

Everyone is excited about something new when they first start. That’s the main reason it’s not that hard to set up goals. However, if you rely only on motivation and willpower to see your goal to success, it’ll be much harder to keep at it. Instead, rely on the schedule and tasks you’ve set up each day to ensure your success. No motivation or willpower needed, just your schedule.

Set Up Accountability

One way to ensure you stick to your schedule, implementing the steps you need to take to reach your goal, is to set up accountability. You can do that on your own using technology reminders and rewards or you can work with a friend or a paid life coach to help you reach your goals.

Commitment to your goals starts on day one, with goal setting, and then culminates in making a daily plan that leads you to success, if you take the action steps required. When you do this, little motivation or will power is needed, regardless of the type of goal you’ve set.
